Cleland Park 7th - 8th Streets & Howard Street. L
In the early 1920's the Delta Women's Club determined their growing community needed a city park. Several parcels of marshland were deeded to the city to "develop a City Park & Pleasure Ground". On January 2, 1924 the City Council formed a six-member Park Commission, which hired
Mr. Clarence Riley as Caretaker. Dr. Cleland, Health Officer, saw the need for a supervised pool. He formed the Delta Swim Pool Stock Company raising $10,000. The Women's Club raised another $2,000 to help pay for the pool, which opened July 31, 1927. In 1930, the Delta Lions Club added housing facilities for a zoo, which closed in the late 60's. Over the years, public service groups have added tennis courts, plantings, horseshoe pits and in 1983 a pavilion. After 66 years of use, Cleand Pool closed it's doors in 1993 and was demolished.
